2) Social – Emotional Skills Can Be Learned:
Children learn social emotional skills in a variety of ways, including the behaviour they see models by the adults in their lives. But social- emotional skills and concepts can also be taught explicitly in the classroom, in much the same way the academic subjects are taught.
3) How SEL is Taught in the Classroom:
The teacher explains a concept with words, pictures, video, and / or audio;
The kids practice the concept through skill practice, group discussion, individual writing, or partner work;
The teacher continues reinforcing the concept throughout the week;
The teacher sends information home for the kids to work on with parents;
The teacher checks for understanding;
The teacher re- teaches where necessary.

What is the purpose of second step?
Second Step is a classroom-based social skills program for kids (ages 4–14 years), with a distinct curriculum for each grade. It is designed to reduce impulsive, high-risk, and aggressive behaviors and increase children’s social competence and other protective factors.
What is second step early learning?
Second Step Early Learning is designed specifically for multiple-age early learning environments. The program is taught through 28 Weekly Themes that include five- to seven-minute activities to be taught throughout the week. The Skills for Learning Unit teaches self-regulation and focusing attention.

Thus, the program name “Second Step” came into being. Our first step was to prevent the abuse of kids in the here and now. Our second step was to prevent it from happening in the future, by teaching children “prosocial” skills that would reduce their risk of being the abusers of others.
